Why Stronghold

Gentle work,
real recovery

Steven treating a client

Not all recovery is deep and firm. Lymphatic drainage sits at the gentle end, light, slow and rhythmic, working with the system that clears fluid and waste rather than digging into the muscle. It is the calm counterpart to the harder work Steven already does.

It suits the times your body is holding fluid, feeling puffy or heavy, or recovering from training, injury or surgery. Steven brings the same honest, no-pressure approach, and the same mobile setup, straight to your door.

Lymphatic drainage

Gentle pressure,
real flow

Your lymphatic system runs just beneath the skin, clearing fluid and waste and carrying it back toward the heart through a network of vessels and nodes. When it slows down, fluid can pool and leave you swollen, puffy and heavy. Lymphatic drainage is a gentle, rhythmic massage that gives that system a nudge, using light strokes to move fluid toward the lymph nodes where it can clear.

What it can help with

  • Swelling and fluid retention
  • Puffy, heavy or tired-feeling limbs
  • Recovery after training, injury or surgery
  • Post-operative and post-cosmetic-surgery recovery
  • That sluggish, run-down feeling, and general reset
  • Supporting the immune system and overall wellbeing

Who it is for

Anyone carrying fluid or feeling puffy and heavy, people recovering from an operation or procedure, athletes who want a gentle recovery option between hard sessions, and anyone who finds deep massage too much. It is light, calming and suitable for most people, with a few exceptions covered below.

Recovery and movement

Lighter, not harder

Because swelling
slows you down.

When fluid pools, everything feels heavy and tight and recovery drags. Lymphatic drainage works with the body rather than against it, easing that load with light, rhythmic strokes so you feel lighter, looser and more like yourself.

What's involved

A lymphatic session is calm and unhurried. Steven starts by stimulating the areas where your lymph nodes sit, then uses light, repeating strokes to coax fluid toward them. No deep pressure, no straining, just gentle, steady work.

Your session

What to expect

Steven brings everything to you. You lie back comfortably while he works with very light, slow, rhythmic strokes, far gentler than a sports massage. There is nothing to brace against and nothing that should hurt. Most people find it deeply relaxing and many drift off. A session usually runs around thirty to sixty minutes.

Afterwards

Drink plenty of water to help your body clear what has been moved, and keep moving gently through the day. It is best to avoid alcohol, a lot of caffeine, very hot baths or a sauna for the rest of the day. Some people notice they need the loo more often, which is normal.

When it is not suitable

Lymphatic drainage is gentle, but it is not right for everyone. It should be avoided if you have a blood clot or DVT, an active infection, cellulitis or a fever, heart failure or heart disease, or kidney failure. It is not used over cancerous tissue or recently irradiated skin, and it needs medical clearance during pregnancy or alongside cancer treatment. If you are unsure, check with your GP first, and tell Steven anything relevant when you book so he can advise honestly.

FAQ

Common questions

What is lymphatic drainage massage?

A gentle, rhythmic massage that works with the lymphatic system just under the skin. Light, slow strokes help move fluid toward the lymph nodes, which can ease swelling, reduce fluid retention and help the body clear waste. It is much lighter than a sports massage.

What does it help with?

Easing swelling and fluid retention, calming puffy or heavy-feeling limbs, supporting recovery after training, injury or surgery, and feeling lighter and less sluggish. It is also popular for post-operative and post-cosmetic-surgery recovery.

Does it hurt? What does it feel like?

No. It is one of the gentlest treatments there is, light and rhythmic rather than deep. Most people find it deeply relaxing and many drift off during the session.

How is it different from a sports massage?

A sports massage works deep into the muscle to release tension. Lymphatic drainage is the opposite, very light pressure that works the surface to move fluid, not the deep tissue. They suit different needs and can complement each other.

Who should avoid it?

It is not suitable with a blood clot or DVT, an active infection, cellulitis or fever, heart failure or heart disease, or kidney failure. It is avoided over cancerous tissue or recent radiation skin, and needs medical clearance during pregnancy or with cancer treatment. If in doubt, check with your GP.
